This week, Sony’s Ice Age survival movie The Solutrean starts filming in IMAX 3D in Vancouver. Check out some photos one of their sets below.
Twenty-thousand years ago, a First Nations boy set out on a expedition across a frozen tundra to return to his home. This is the premise behind The Solutrean, an upcoming feature from Sony. The film is being directed by Allen Hughes (Menace II Society, The Book of Eli) and will spend time in British Columbia, Alberta and Iceland over the next several months.
Production kicked off today on set built in the lot at the end of Boundary Road near East Kent Avenue in Vancouver. Crew have spent the past several weeks preparing the site for the filming. You can see the massive designed in BC “Air Wall” green (blue) screens surrounding the set from nearby.
In the centre of the action is a mound of fake snow and what looks like the remains of a woolly mammoth. At the top of the mound is a snow/ice sculpture that looks similar to an Inuksuk. This morning they were blowing some fake snow through a massive fan onto the set. Off to the side is another smaller set with trees covered in fake snow. There’s similar tundra-looking set that they have built in-studio as well.

They’ve already got some long days/late nights planned for this location. They’ll be filming from 7am to 3am the following day February 25th/26th and March 10th/11th according to this filming notice we found and posted. The Solutrean also has a location setup at a private property along Marine Drive near London Place in Burnaby.

Part of the movie will also be filmed in Southern Alberta. The Vancouver-based part of the production will be on hiatus from April 1st to 30th and filming is scheduled to take place in Alberta from March 28th to April 22nd.
